TikTokers arrested ‘running £153,000,000 tax scam’

TikTok users are being cautioned to be vigilant against tax scams following the arrest of two men in east London related to a suspected scheme involving £153 million in fraudulent claims.
TikTok users are being cautioned to be vigilant against tax scams following the arrest of two men in east London related to a suspected scheme involving £153 million in fraudulent claims.

Two Brits both in their early twenties have been accused of enticing UK residents into providing their tax information as they provide financial benefits through the app.


HMRC is urging social media users to be vigilant, and if posts promise ‘risk-free’ rewards look at what they are requesting from you. In this case your personal tax information.


Your personal data is then used, by the fraudsters to apply for tax repayments you are not entitled to and will eventually be told to repay. In the meantime the con artists would have spend your repayment enriching their lifestyle.


This is not the first of its kind, scams of this nature are also run on other apps such as Snapchat and Instagram.


Advice: Protect your personal tax information the same way you would your personal banking information after all for many of us our accounts are linked.
