Business Energy Scam

"Best rates on the market"

Over the last 4 months I have been bombarded by a business energy supplier who, considering all the conversations; of which there must have been over 20 where they've caught me off guard and 40 plus from numbers I have blocked. Despite this, I still remain no clearer on the name of the energy provider/broker. They have WhatsApp'd me asking for my business meter MPAN number which I have also blocked. They continue to call me and the last conversation ended this evening where I very politely told Rahan, (the cold caller) clearly I will not be considering this company as an energy supplier, despite their grit and determination. What finally cemented the last straw was, Rahan asked me to confirm my business address and he read it to me. Unfortunately, he read an incorrect postcode, the postcode repeated was directions I use on my website, taking guests to the rear of the property, which instantly told me where they were souring their information from. Rahan took the comments I presented calmly well, and without hesitation I politely removed myself from the conversation. After light research these companies are third party energy brokers or aggressive lead generator agencies who pitch commercial energy contracts to businesses. Third party energy brokers have high commissions and can trick businesses into switching without being fully transparent regarding the contract, the business is subsequently not aware of what they're getting themselves into.

I have switched a business contract formally with a third party energy broker (a UK based team), who due to a mix up with the contracts meant the supply didn't change hands as expected from one of the top 6 to another, and cost me hundreds of pounds extra whilst the contracts were being sorted out, this took months.

Always remember with business we have fewer rights, never say "Yes" to any questions as verbal agreements can be binding contracts for businesses.

Paul Savage, head of the business consumer operations for the UK’s gas and electricity watchdog, Energywatch, states “We have seen a worrying increase in the number of contacts we are receiving from business consumers that have been targeted by unscrupulous cold callers, and who have found themselves locked into an electricity or gas contract over the phone. These calls do not allow consumers to make an objective comparison of the deal being sold and we are concerned that many consumers simply do not understand what they have agreed to. Energywatch, as a result, strongly advises energy consumers not to agree to anything over the phone in the first instance without making sure that what you are being offered is really competitive before making a decision, this way you are in control!”
