Beware of the standing order scam text
Beware of the standing order scam text

Which has reported an old scam hitting back again this week. A text, appearing to arrive from Nationwide has been making the rounds again. Sent from a spoofed UK mobile number, it informs you that a standing order has been set up on your account. A convenient phone number is also in the message which will connect you to a fraudster waiting to harvest your personal and banking information.

This scam made headline news back in 2017 originally reported by the Mirror. At that time hackers were requesting the victim urgently call the fraud prevention team on the phone number provided. Nationwide requested customers in doubt contact them via the number on their card.

The scam has refined itself a little in the last decade. The amount is for much less, formerly for large amounts, such as "verification of £1,976 payment to the Apple online store". As we have all become a little hardened to this deception fraudsters have made it more subtle. Less money, and a highly trusted, premium British high street institution.
