Pick a pocket or two

Whilst pickpocketing has been around since people wore trousers it is wise to remember it still happens today, especially when our guard is down and the local vicinity is packed with people in transit. When we are heading on holiday; this makes us the perfect target.
Distracted by the architecture of a new country, or mesmerised by the marvels of our own beautiful cities, we are vulnerable. This is why con artists prey on us now, because we are happy, free from work and the toils of life and ready to embrace our freedom. Whilst in this relaxed state of mind, still be aware of the following:
Transit squeeze: This happens in busy places buses, trams, underground, escalators and airports. This usually involves a few of the scammers working together pushing up against you and pushing you forward in a crowd, whilst this distraction happens they are fishing around in your bag and pockets for your mobile, purse, cards or wallet.
Table Grab: This has featured in many films but is still a classic for those of us who put our purse/ wallet or phone on the table. A map, petition, or newspaper is thrown over your device and as they leave you do not miss that your funds or phone has left with them.
Distraction technique: Again teams are working together to distract you. If you have a drink spilt on you, an argument happen around you or people asking for directions, be aware of your valuables first and put your hands on them.
Don't forget the HUGGER MUGGER. Whilst it sounds ridiculous, it happens. If you get an inappropriate cuddle find your valuables. It only takes a second or two for the thieves to find what they're after as usually they have spotters who have been watching you for a while to see where your phone or purse is kept.
How to make their life difficult according to the MET:
Bags and purses closed and secure
Return cards to your bag or purse quickly and secure
Carry your bag in front of you and on the diagonal
Use a money belt if carrying large amounts of cash
Keep a list of emergency numbers separate from wallet and phone in case you need help
Keep a photocopy of airline tickets and passport that would be inconvenient to replace if stolen
Do not hang your bag on the back of a chair
Do not place your bag on the floor out of sight
Do not hang your bag on the back of the pushchair
