The Jolly Holiday Scam

Updated: Aug 10

Whilst the schools have broken up for summer and many of us are off on our jolly holidays, some last minute friends are scrabbling around for somewhere to go with the youngsters. Be aware that the holiday scam market is worth millions every year. According to Age UK, in 2022-23 it took £15 million from the UK market.

The scams include, apartments and villas advertised by 3rd party famous booking agents, uploaded by fraudsters claiming to own a villa they do not have. Booking agents are becoming more aware of this scam now and are paying hosts after your visit.

Be careful of links when browsing sending you to cloned sites. Be sure you are on verified booking sites. This is an easy scam to fall victim to when you're under pressure to find somewhere and frustrated with hunting for the perfect holiday.

Search your chosen accommodation outside of the booking site for verification, find their company website and check out their socials, Trustpilot etc. If you enjoy the old school approach telephone the accommodation direct. In hospitality you will be able to speak to a person, and you will be able to view the hotel, holiday let or apartments verified reviews, this will tell you how long they have been operational and will give you peace of mind you will get the apartment you have paid for.

Remember to pay with a debit or credit card not bank transfer.
