A warning has been released today by West Yorkshire Police about a new trend of scams targeting students predominantly, but has the potential to spread to other members of the public in particular those struggling to make ends meet, or vulnerable members of the community.

The fraudsters are recruiting innocent people to accept parcels on their behalf and take cash as a thank you. The Police advise "criminals are always looking for new ways to move illegal goods and stolen property without drawing attention to themselves." It is considered that these parcels can contain drugs, weapons, cash, or stolen goods. According to reports the approach is usually made through social media recuiting students to "help" them.

West Yorkshire Police are asking parents to discuss this with their uni age children and approach the subject informing them of the risks associated with the scam.

Chief Inspector Michelle Swift of West Yorkshire Police said:

“This is worryingly becoming a growing trend, we’re seeing here in West Yorkshire.

What may seem like an easy favour or a way to get quick cash, it could leave you facing a police investigation and a criminal record."
