What to do if you suspect your device has been infected?
Is your antivirus product telling you it has found an infection?
If you suspect an infection run an antivirus scan to see what it detects.
If you don't have antivirus, unusual operations include:
Look out for pop-up boxes. If you have flashes of boxes, several one after another within seconds on your screen, that is your antivirus closing an attack. Something is trying but not succeeding. At this point keep your updates updated.
Has someone received an email from you asking for vouchers? Or promoting something you do not own.
Be on the look out for unusually slow operating, opening apps you are not in, closing apps you have not finished with, closing programs randomly & rebooting itself.
If you suspect an infection on a mobile device such as smart phone or tablet, the only real option is a hard factory reset I am sorry to say. This is according to our National Cyber Security Centre.
With your PC and laptop a reputable antivirus can work. Update your device and programs. Do this as a matter of course if you remember to protect yourself from the latest viruses and malware.
Open your antivirus run a second scan and see has that fixed the issue. If your antivirus can’t sort out the problem, it is time to reinstall everything sadly, yes including your operating system. This is again the official advice from our National Cyber Security Centre. If you can't install antivirus most likely your browser is infected, you can always get expert help.
If you can try to set automatic updates to protect your devices from the latest threats.
