According to National Trading Standards (NTS) and Ask Silver, a free platform for checking consumer scams, criminals are 'poisoning' AI models like Chat GPT and other large language models (LLMs) which are website equivalent to Chat GPT, so that these models recognise scam websites and suggest them to consumers conducting online searches.
The problems then becomes we are so reliant on our trusted AI platform that we then consider their recommendations to be "safe".
Research indicates that 'copycat' websites, which are replicas of legitimate businesses, are being suggested in AI-generated search results. These fraudulent web addresses closely resemble the authentic sites and charge for products that are never delivered. Such websites are attracting hundreds of daily visitors through AI recommendations, increasing the risk for consumers of encountering scam sites.
National Trading Standards is advising consumers who utilize AI search to verify that they are on an authentic website before making purchases. One method to ensure this is by using approved tools like those offered by Ask Silver or Get Safe Online, which can determine a website's legitimacy and offer guidance in just a few seconds.
